50 Years Ago –1950 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer June 22, 2000) The Methodist Church of Pine City was the scene of a beautiful wedding Wednesday, June 14, when Miss Ruth Korf, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Korf, became the bride of Milford Hanson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hanson of Braham.  The Rev. J. Miller performed the single ring ceremony before an alter decorated with baskets of lilies and bridal wreath.

50 Years Ago –1950 (Published in the Pine  City Pioneer June 22, 2000)  Miss Marion Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robe Brown of Pine City, became the bride of Lawrence Shermer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Shermer, also of Pine City at a pretty wedding ceremony at the Zion Lutheran Church Friday, June 16 at 1 o’clock.

50 Years Ago –1950 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer June 22, 2000) Delores Stoffel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Stoffel, was united in marriage to Adrian Eich of Minneapolis on June 10, at 9:30 a.m. in a double ring ceremony performed by the Rev. Daniel McEnery at the Immaculate Conception Church.

75 Years Ago –1925 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer June 22, 2000) A very pretty wedding took place last Tuesday, June 30 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception when Agnes Tachney became the bride of William Drimel.

75 Years Ago – June 11, 1925 (Published in the Pine County Courier June 8, 2000) Word reached here last week that W. W. DeLa passed away at the Soldier’s Home in Minneapolis last Tuesday.  Mr. DeLa made his home here for several years and was well know.  He was a Civil War veteran and an upright, conscientious Christian  man who was held in the highest respect by all who knew him. 

50 Years Ago - Sept. 28, 1950 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer Sept. 28, 2000) Alfred Teich of Pine City passed away Thursday morning at 10:40 enroute to Lakeside Hospital.  He had been ailing the past year of heart trouble and other complications.

Olson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Olson of Rock Creek, were united in holy wedlock at the East Rock Creek Baptist Church on Saturday evening Sept. 23 at 8 p.m.

50 Years Ago - Sept. 28, 1950 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer Sept. 28, 2000) The wedding of Esther Marie Blumhoefer and Arnold Albert Knapp was solemnized in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Pine City, in a double ring ceremony at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 19.

100 Years Ago - Oct. 5, 1900 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer Sept. 28, 2000) Erick Johnson, who looks after the water tank at Brook Park, has taken up with the old adage “that it is not good for man to be alone”.  Therefore, he has taken unto himself a wife, and will dwell within the gates of Brook Park.

100 Years Ago - Aug. 24, 1900 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer Aug. 17, 2000) Married at Hinckley Aug. 13, 1900, by the Rev. J. J. Parish of this place, Miss Maggie Parish of Benton County, a sister of the pastor, to Mr. There on Hodgson of Aitkin.

100 Years Ago - Aug. 24, 1900 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer Aug. 17, 2000) After a brief illness of less than a week, Joacim  Grimm, a well known resident of this place, passed peacefully away on Wednesday morning, Aug. 22.

50 Years Ago - Aug. 24, 1950 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer Aug. 24, 2000) A very pretty wedding was solemnized at the First Presbyterian Church of Hinckley Sunday, Aug. 6 at 2 p.m. when Miss Marion Mans, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Mans of Brook Park, became the bride of Robert F. Ford, son of Mr. and Mrs.  Clint Ford of Hinckley.

50 Years Ago - Aug. 24, 1950 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer Aug. 24, 2000) Fred Gordon Smack, 20 year old nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Jacobson, has been reported as missing in action in Korea since July 22, according to a message received by the Jacobsons Thursday of last week.

75 Years Ago - Sept. 3, 1925 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer Aug. 24, 2000) Miss Ruth Inez Oberg was united in marriage to Norman Lucast of Minneapolis last Saturday at the Methodist parsonage at West Rock.

50 Years Ago - Aug. 3, 1950 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer Aug. 3, 2000) Frank O. Kuss, son of the late Cyrill and Rose Kuss, of Pine City, died at Baker, MT Friday, July 28 from a heart attack.  At his untimely death, he was 57 years old.

Rypkema, became the bride of Ernest Teich, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Teich of Pine City.

50 Years Ago Sept. 7, 1950 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer September 7, 2000) Open house was held last Sunday afternoon and evening Sept. 3 at the Beroun Cafe Hall in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Haberman on  their golden anniversary.  Mr. and Mrs. Peter Haberman are pioneer settlers of this community.  Mr. Haberman came here from Steel County in 1896 with Frank Skalicky and Anton Pavek, making the trip with a team of horses, taking five days.

75 Years Ago - Sept. 17, 1925 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer September 7, 2000) William McKusick and Miss Luella Dunegan were married at the parish house of the St. Paul Cathedral by the Rev. Lawrence Ryan on  Thursday,  Sept. 10.

25 Years Ago - Sept. 17, 1975 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer September 14, 2000) The Zion Lutheran Church of Pine City was the scene of a beautiful wedding July 19, 1975 when Pamela Marie  Teich, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.  Robert Teich, became the bride of Steven Ernest Wiener, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Wiener.  The double ring ceremony was performed by Pastor David Bode in the presence of 250 guests.

25 Years Ago - Sept. 17, 1975 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer September 14, 2000) Kenneth E. Deming, 48, publisher of the Hinckley News, died Saturday night, Sept. 13 at his home in Hinckley.  He had been failing health for the past 14 months with heart disease.

50 Years Ago - Oct. 26, 1950 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer Oct. 26, 2000 Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Shatava were honored on their Golden Wedding Anniversary on Sunday, Oct. 22 by a family reunion of their children and close friends.  The celebration was held at their home in the west part of town.  Mr. and Mrs. Shatava were married on Oct. 22, 1900 in Czechoslovakia.  To this union was born 10 children.

75 years ago…1926 Published in the Pine City Pioneer July 5, 2001) Two members of the Blanchard family were married in Chicago last week when Miss Mildred, daughter and William, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Blanchard, were both married there.  Miss Mildred’s wedding took place Friday morning at 10 o’clock when she was united in marriage to Forest Kincade.  William and Miss Margaret Kenny were united in marriage Saturday afternoon at 4 o’clock at the Lady of Sorrow Church.

75 years ago…1926 Published in the Pine City Pioneer July 5, 2001) Magnus Larson, who lived about six miles southeast of here in a shanty, was found dead in the road on the night of the Fourth.   Mr. Larson had been to Rush City.  Larson’s team came home with the wagon seat broken, and upon search being made, his lifeless body was found lying by the side of the road.  The Corner was called and on investigation, it was found that his neck was broken.

75 years ago…1926 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer, July 12, 2001) Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Morrow arrived from Princeton, IL last Monday for a visit at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Morrow.  Ernest was married about a month ago and this is his first trip home with his bride.  His many friends extend congratulations.

50 years ago…1926 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer, July 19, 2001) Mr. and Mrs. Raymond G., Swanson celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on July 1 at the home of their daughter and son-in-law, Robert and Pearl Peterson, who held an open house in honor of the occasion.  About 100 friends and relatives called during the afternoon to congratulate the couple.

50 years ago on
July 19, 1950 (Published in the Pine County Courier July 19, 2001) Louis Dick, a prominent local pioneer, passed away at Duluth last Monday.  He came to Sandstone in 1904 and started a clothing store, which he sold to Jos. H. Klein in 1914.  He continued to make Sandstone his home as he owned several farms near Grindstone lake.  He is survived by three sisters.

75 years ago July 1926 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer July 26, 2001) William J. Gross and Miss Elizabeth Wimmer were united in marriage by Father Leo last Tuesday morning at nine o’clock.  The wedding was performed at the Church of Immaculate Conception.

50 years ago July 1926 (Published in the Pine County Courier, page 5, July 26, 2001) A baby boy arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Greenly Tuesday of this week.  He will be known as Bennett Dale.

25 years ago July 1926 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer July 26, 2001) Mr. & Mrs. Leo Reed, with their 12 children, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Sunday, July 25, with a family gathering of 200 people at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.  This is the first time in 31 years that the entire family has been able to be together.  Grandchildren and great grandchildren number 106, with one great great grandchild.

25 years ago 1926 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer July 26, 2001) A large crown of relatives and close friends from Beroun, Pine City, St. Paul, Cambridge, Rush City, Coon Rapids and West Rock gathered at the Dick Kuzel home to help Dick and Diane celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary.

75 years ago July 1926 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer July 26, 2001) William F. Henderson, brother of Tom Henderson of Pine City, was accidentally killed at Duluth last Thursday afternoon when he came in contact with a high power electric wire.  He was employed by the Minnesota Light & Power company and was out working with a crew on the line.  It is thought that he received a light shock that threw him against the power line.

100 years ago July 1926 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer July 26, 2001) This year’s state Fair will be a record breaker.  Vice President Roosevelt will open it.

75 years ago August 1926 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer, Aug. 16, 2001) Adolph Vojta, 15 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Vincel Vojta who reside northeast of Pine City, was accidentally drowned while out fishing last Sunday afternoon.  The tragedy occurred between four and five o’clock in the Snake River, about 4 ½ miles below the dam.

50 years ago Aug. 1926 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer, Aug. 16, 2001) Miss Phyllis Swanson became the bride of Harold Kick in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church on Aug. 4.  A reception was held in the church basement for about 120 friends and relatives of the bride and groom

75 years ago Aug. 1926 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer, Aug. 16, 2001) Two former Pine City young men were married in Chicago last Saturday afternoon when Paul Benda, son of Mrs. Mary Benda, and Emery Blanchard, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Blanchard, married sisters at a double wedding.  Mr. Benda’s bride is Miss Marion Lehmann, and Miss Frances Lehmann is the bride of Mr. Blanchard.

75 years ago Aug.  1926 (Published in the Pine County Courier Aug. 20, 2001) Grandpa K.G. Feyma informs the Courier of the birth of a son to Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Feyma of Ventura, California on Aug. 11.  Of course Mr. Feyma’s countenance was radiant with smiles and he proudly informed us that he now has 21 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

75 years ago Aug. 1926 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer Sept. 20, 2001) Henry J. Kvech and Miss Marian J. Pekarek were united in marriage last Tuesday morning about 8:30.  The ceremony was performed by Father Leo at the parish house in Pine City.  Miss Tillie Caroon was the bridesmaid and Alois Baum acted as best man.

50 years ago March 1, 1951 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer March 1, 2001) Mrs. Lillian Glader of Rock Creek passed away at Midway Hospital in St. Paul on Saturday, Feb. 24, following a short illness.  She was 58 years old.

50 years ago March 1, 1951  (Published in the Pine  City Pioneer March 1, 2001) Mrs. Eva Norton Dvorak, a former resident of Pine City, died in Minneapolis on Feb. 6 at the age of 48 years of cancer, after an illness of three months.

75 years ago March 11, 1926  (Published in the Pine City Pioneer March 1, 2001) Ben Anderson of Grasston and Sara Sheck were united in marriage at Minneapolis Saturday, Feb. 27 and came to Grasston to his home that night.  The bride was born and raised in Iowa, and the groom has farmed near Grasston for a number of years.

100 years ago March 8, 1901  (Published in the Pine City Pioneer March 1, 2001) Born, Thursday morning, March 7, to Mr. and Mrs. Math Prochaska, a son.  The mother and child are doing nicely and Math is brim full of happiness over the first boy.

50 years ago March 15, 1951 (Published in the Pine County Courier March 15, 2001) A baby boy, Ronald Lee, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Troolin at the Mora hospital March 11.  The young man tipped the scales at 7 lbs. nine ounces.

25 years ago March 10, 1976 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer March 8, 2001) Dorothy Alice Kraft, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred W. Kraft, became the bride of David Lowell Hill, son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Hill of Pine City in a double ring marriage ceremony solemnized on Jan. 24 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception.  Monsignor Michael J. Hogan officiated at the exchange of nuptial vows.

Janda, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Janda of Grand Island, NE, in a double ring marriage ceremony solemnized on Dec. 27 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Pine City.  Monsignor Michael J. Hogan officiated at the exchange of the nuptial vows.

50 years ago March 8, 1951 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer March 8, 2001) Hans Dan Hanson passed away at his home in Brook Park March 2 from a heart attack at the age of 35 years.

50 years ago March 8, 1951 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer March 8, 2001) The First Presbyterian Church of Hinckley was the scene of a pretty candlelight wedding Friday evening, March 2 at eight o’clock when Miss Betty Rypkema daughter of Sheriff and Mrs. Hannes Rypkema, became the bride of Kenneth Bennewise of Duluth.

50 years ago March 8, 1951 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer March 8, 2001) Brook Park: Sympathy is extended to Mrs. Frank Blahnik and Mr. Anton Libra, whose aged father, Joseph Libra, passed away Friday very suddenly.  Friday evening, after feeding the chickens, he came into the house complaining of a sudden chill.  His son told him to sit down in his favorite rocker, while he got a blanket for a wrap.  Death came only a few minutes later.

50 years ago March 8, 1951 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer March 8, 2001) Mr. and Mrs. Willard L. Swanson are the proud parents of a boy, born at the Miller Hospital.  He was named Douglas Willard.

Lesure, an energetic and prosperous farmer.  The ceremony took place at the residence of Ivan D. Curryer near Hinckley.  The Rev. S. F. Wishard of Pine City officiated.

50 years ago September 13, 1951 (published in the Pine County Courier, September 13, 2001) Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Dancer are the proud parents of a baby girl born t the Rush City hospital Sept. 1.  She has been named Marilyn Kaye.  The Dancers have now moved to Gilbert where Kenneth is employed in the mines.

75 years ago September 30, 1926 (published in the Pine County Courier, September 27, 2001) The news reached here last Saturday that Mrs. Wm. Aiken, one of Sandstone’s most highly respected old ladies, had passed away at a St. Peter hospital the day before.  She was 74 years old.

25 years ago, September 23, 1976 (published in the Pine County Courier, 20, 2001) September A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Troolin, Jr. in Duluth on Sept. 22.  He is named Robert Charles Vincent.

50 years ago, October 11, 1951 (published in the Pine County Courier, Oct. 11, 2001) Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Gjertson are the proud parents of a baby boy, Robert Allen, born Oct. 5 at Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis.  Mrs. Arthur Martin left Monday evening to spend a few days at the Gjertson home and see her new grandson.

Leu were united in marriage by Judge Wilcox at the courthouse last Thursday afternoon at two o-clock.  The bridal couple was attended by William and May Caroon, brother and sister of the groom.

75 years ago  Oct. 1926 (published in the Pine City Pioneer, Oct, 4, 2001) John Bogue and Miss Margaret Hady took their friends and relatives completely by surprise a few days ago when they announced they had been married for nearly three years.  Thee ceremony was performed Dec. 31, 1923, at thee Church of the Holy Redeemer in St. Paul.

100 years ago Oct. 1901 (published in the Pine City Pioneer, Oct, 4, 2001) Monday, Oct. 7, 1901, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church by the Rev. Father Buechler, Miss Marion Wimmer of the town of Royalton was joined in the bonds of wedlock to Mr. Charles Sandon of Duluth.

75 years ago Sept. 1926 (published in the Pine City Pioneer, Sept. 13, 2001) A surprise party was held at the William Danger home last Sunday to celebrate Mr. Danger’s 68th birthday.  Those present were Mrs. Fleck of St. Paul, Erick Coleen and family of Bock and Henry J. Danger and family of Greeley.  Bill is one of thee pioneers in this neck of the woods as he has been a resident of this community for the past 44 years.  He looks just as hale and hearty as he might have looked 44 years ago.

50 Years Ago April 1952 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer April 11, 2002) Death came to Robert Wilcox, 81, retired Judge of Probate of Pine County and Pine City’s longest-time resident.  His health had been failing since August of last year, and four weeks ago, he suffered the first of two heart attacks that brought about an acute condition.


100 Years Ago April 1902 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer April 11, 2002) Wednesday afternoon what might have proved a serious accident occurred when a sailboat tipped over in the middle of the river just west of the railroad bridge.  Louis Kowalke, eldest son of Otto Kowalke, John Breckenridge, eldest son of J. Y. Breckenridge, and Wayne Lones, second son of J. L. Lones, were in the boat.  The boys suffered no other injury than a good scare and a thorough wetting in ice water.


50 Years Ago April 1952 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer April 18, 2002) The Pine City Methodist Church was the scene of a beautiful wedding when Ruthellen Tomlinson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Tomlinson, Sr., and James Berglund, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Berglund, were united in marriage.  The day was also the 63rd wedding anniversary of the bride’s paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Tomlinson of Granada, who were present at the ceremony.


100 Years Ago April 1902 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer April 18, 2002) At St. Mary’s Church in this village on Monday morning at 11 a.m., Miss Elizabeth Mikco of St. Paul and Mike Osen of the Twon of Royalton were married.  The bride was supported by her sister, Miss Thresia Mikco, and Miss Lena Petchel; the groom was supported by his brother, Joseph Osen, and Willie Erhart.  The Rev.  Fr. Buechler performed the ceremony.  After the ceremony, the bridal party departed at once for the home of the groom in the Twon of Royalton, where dancing and a general good time was participated in by the large number of friends of the contracting parties. 


50 Years Ago May 1952 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer May 2, 2002) Marriage vows were spoken by Irene M. Mortenson of Rush City and Jerome J. Peters of Pine City at a High Mass at the Sacred Heart Church in Rush City.  Father Payant performed the double ring ceremony.  Ray Arimond of Pine City sang the Mass, and he also sang “Panis Angelicus” and “Ava Maria.”


75 Years Ago  June 1927 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer June 6, 2002) A very pretty wedding was solemnized at the home of the Rev. Harry Barnes in  Beroun last Saturday afternoon when Miss Alice Lucille Daniels became the bride of Mr. Albert Herdina.  Only immediate relatives attended the ceremony, which was a simple one.  Following the ceremony, the newlyweds left for Duluth by motor on a short weekend trip.  The bride was attended by Miss Carol Kelly and Merill Daniels.  Only one brother of Miss Alice attended the groom.  The ring service was used.

100 Years Ago June 1902 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer June 6, 2002) Miss Kate Barnum left for Des Moines, Iowa, where she will attend school in that city.


25 Years Ago June 1952 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer, June 13, 2002) A surprise charivari party was held on Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Pangerl on Friday evening for their 30th anniversary with about a hundred people attending.  A good time was had by all.


100 Years Ago  June 1902 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer, June 13, 2002) Dr. Morgan, the dentist who has had 24 years constant practice, will make visits to Pine City once a month.  Best teeth, $10 per set.  Teeth filled from 50 to 75 cents.  Teeth pulled without pain by use of laughing gas.  All work warranted.

75 Years Ago June 1927 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer, June 20, 2002) Miss Gladys Friday, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Friday of Rock Creek, became the bride of Henry Lubrecht, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lubrecht of Pine Town, at a very quiet ceremony performed at the Methodist parsonage June 18.  They left on Sunday night by car for Box Elder, MT, where they will remain for the summer.

75 Years Ago June 1927 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer, June 27, 2002) On Sunday morning at about 10 o’clock a large Studebaker Sedan driven by Leo Gallik, living east of Pine City, crashed into a horse drawn vehicle in which Mrs. B. W. Ferguson, her daughter, Vera, and Grace Ward, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Ward, were driving and Mrs.  Ferguson was very seriously injured.  The buggy was demolished by the impact, and all the occupants thrown into the road.  Mrs. Ferguson received the most serious injuries, was unconscious when picked up by the Lloyds and brought to town for medical attention.  She suffered a broken shoulder, two deep gashes on the head, internal injuries and a seriously injured neck.  This latter injury is so serious that she cannot be moved to a hospital or the sanatorium, where x-rays could be taken.  She is at the Stratte home under constant care.


75 Years Ago June 1927 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer, June 27, 2002) Sig Striegl, formerly of Pine City, left Minneapolis Saturday for Quebec with his orchestra.  “The Minnesotans,” and they will go from there to Europe.  Sig is going on his own this year and has booked engagements in various European cities.  This orchestra is made up of University of Minnesota students where Sig is now attending and is under his management and direction.


100 Years Ago June 1902 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer, June 27, 2002) The Pine City Mercantile Company will close their store all day July 4th.  They intend to put in the full day in celebrating.


50 Years Ago July 1952 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer, July 4, 2002) A family reunion was held at the L. E. Therrien residence in Minneapolis, the occasion being the celebration of the 52nd wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Therrien.  Pine City residents attending were Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Nelson and Billy, and Mr. and Mrs. R. Hegman.


50 Years Ago July 1952  (Published in the Pine City Pioneer, July 4, 2002) In a car-truck collision north of Beroun, John P. Hicks, driver of the car, was killed and John Kroll, driver of the truck, escaped with only a bump on the head.  Kroll was making a left turn into the driveway of his home when Hicks pulled to the side to pass another vehicle and ran into the truck.  The car was badly damaged and the truck only slightly.


75 Years Ago July 1927 (Published in the Pine City Pioneer, July 4, 2002) Again the angel of death has laid his hand on the head of a prominent citizen and faithful public official, calling him from the duties of a busy life to that last long resting place.  It becomes our duty to chronicle the death of  R. J. Hawley, or “Rody” if you please, for the past 29 years the sheriff of this county and one of the best known and most universally admired men in public life in this section of the state.

50 Years Ago Jan. 1953 (published in the Pine City Pioneer January 2, 2003) Ole Andersen, 90, father of Mrs. Rasmus Petersen of Mora and grandfather of Mrs. George I. Clem, died in Minneapolis Monday, Dec. 29 after an illness of only one day, having been active in life up to that time.


50 Years Ago Jan. 1953 (published in the Pine City Pioneer January 2, 2003) Picnic hams in the Super Valu ad were 35 cents a lb. beef chuck roast 45 cents a lb. and port roast 43 cents a lb. a 20 lb. box of Delicious apples could be had for $2.29, and Sunkist navel oranges were two dozen for 39 cents.

 

75 Years Ago Jan. 1928 (published in the Pine City Pioneer January 2, 2003) In 1927 there were two completely separate newspapers in Pine City. One was the Pine County Pioneer, owned by W. P. Gottry and son, Frank. The other was The Pine Poker, owned by W. S. McEachern and Dr. R. Wilcox.

 

75 Years Ago Jan. 1928 (published in the Pine City Pioneer January 2, 2003) Funeral services were held for Lucille Bernice Erickson, three-day-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Erickson on Tuesday afternoon. Services were read by the Rev. Stanley of Rush City. Pallbearers were Nina and Effie Hendrickson, Alice Ruddquist and Marcell Schmidt.


50 Years Ago Jan. 1953(published in the Pine City Pioneer, January 9, 2003) Sgt. Dale R. Wilcox of Rush City was killed in action in Korea. Dale was a basketball player while in the Rush City High School and will be remembered by many boys from this community.

Smith were honored at a reception at their home Saturday evening in observance of their 25th wedding anniversary. The reception was arranged as a surprise for the Smiths by their daughter and son, Marlys and Arthur, with the assistance of several friends and relatives of the family.


50 Years Ago Jan. 1953 (published in the Pine City Pioneer, January 30, 2003) Pfc. Harvey Brones, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Brones of Pokegama Township, was seriously injured in a parachute jump while in training at Fort Bragg, SC. Brones, along with other members of his Company of the 82nd Airborne Division, was making a mass jump from the plane, when a parachuter who had made the jump after Harvey passed him in mid-air and in so doing, took some of the wind out of his chute, which speeded his descent to earth.

W. Harte on Feb. 4th.

100 Years Ago  Feb. 1903 (published in the Pine City Pioneer, February 13, 2003) Charles Heywood, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. I. Heywood, passed away at his home here Feb. 10 after being very ill for the past two months with consumption.


50 Years Ago Feb. 1953 (published in the Pine City Pioneer, February 20, 2003) Thomas W. Ling, resident of Pine City since 1886, passed away at Lakeside Memorial Hospital on Feb. 16 from the effects of a stroke that he suffered last Saturday. He had been downtown on Friday, and although his 89 years had slowed him somewhat, he appeared in his usual good health. The news of his death came as a surprise to all who knew him.


50 Years Ago Feb. 1953 (published in the Pine City Pioneer, February 20, 2003) About 80 relatives and friends attended an open house held at the HerbWhiting home when Mr. and Mrs. Whiting celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary.


100 Years Ago Feb. 1903 (published in the Pine City Pioneer, February 20, 2003) Married at the residence of the groom’s parents, Wednesday evening, Feb. 18 at 8:30, Miss Louise Becker to Joseph Tallon. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. W. E. Loomis of the M. E. Church. They were supported by Miss Alma Becker, a sister of the bride, and Frank Poferl.


50 Years Ago Feb. 1953 (published in the Pine City Pioneer Feb. 27, 2003) Pvt. Adolph Fedder, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Fedder, was pleasantly surprised when he met Arnold Nelson of Pine City and Donald Holmstrom at Eta Jima, Japan. All three are serving in the U.S. Army. Adolph has been in the army for a year, seven months of which has been spent in the medical corps in Japan.

75 Years Ago, March  1928 (published in the Pine County Courier, February 27, 2003) The final debate in the Pine County Debating League was held in the Sandstone School assembly last evening when Askov, representing the northern half, met Sandstone, who had won over the south half. The Askov team, composed of Misses Florence Keller, Freda Hansen and Astrid T Groveson, was defeated by the Sandstone team, composed of Misses Faye Colby and Elizabeth Swanson, and Robert Dredge.
